{"id":328,"date":"2016-06-22T04:52:16","date_gmt":"2016-06-22T04:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lianeallen.com\/home\/?p=328"},"modified":"2016-07-13T16:48:08","modified_gmt":"2016-07-13T16:48:08","slug":"kill-verizon-dns-assistance-for-fios-quantum-gateway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lianeallen.com\/home\/2016\/06\/kill-verizon-dns-assistance-for-fios-quantum-gateway\/","title":{"rendered":"Kill Verizon DNS Assistance for FiOS Quantum Gateway"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The Problem:<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve recently become a Verizon customer, you may find that Verizon has hijacked your browser, so that every time you hit a page that&#8217;s not recognized by its DNS servers, you&#8217;re redirected to a ridiculous Verizon co-branded yahoo search page.<\/p>\n<p>I guess they still think they need some kind of search presence to be a future-forward internet company &#8211; how very 1990s!<\/p>\n<p>This is a <strong>wicked<\/strong> nuisance if you&#8217;re, say, working from home, and accessing a work server over a VPN. You literally can&#8217;t get there. No way, no how.<\/p>\n<p>Verizon helpfully (heh) provides instructions that help you, by pointing your router to a different pair\u00a0of their DNS servers that <em><strong>shouldn&#8217;t<\/strong><\/em> cause the hijacking. There&#8217;s a reason &#8220;shouldn&#8217;t&#8221; isn&#8217;t in plain text &#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>The Solution:<\/h3>\n<p>Tell your router to use public DNS servers, instead of Verizon&#8217;s servers.<\/p>\n<p>The following instructions are for the specific router we have, but with a little sleuthing, you should be able to figure out the analogous steps if you have a different router. Your goal is to find and set the primary and secondary DNS servers for your router&#8217;s connection to the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; <strong>Open<\/strong> a new browser tab<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8211; <strong>Enter http:\/\/192.168.1.1<\/strong> in the address bar.<\/p>\n<p>3 &#8211; <strong>Enter your router&#8217;s admin user name and password<\/strong> into the login screen (default user is usually admin, password is written on a sticker on the router. BTW &#8211; you should change your router&#8217;s admin user, following steps provided by Verizon, after you finish this).<\/p>\n<p>4 &#8211; <strong>Click OK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5 &#8211; <strong>Click My Network<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6 &#8211; <strong>Click Network Connections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7 &#8211; <strong>Click the Edit pencil<\/strong> icon for the <strong>&#8220;Broadband Connection&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>If there&#8217;s more than one labeled &#8220;Broadband Connection,&#8221; choose the one with the word &#8220;connected&#8221; next to it. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(Note: <strong>do NOT edit &#8220;Network (Home\/Office)&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; that&#8217;s your router&#8217;s\u00a0connection into your home network, leave it as-is).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>8 &#8211; On the next page, <strong>click Settings<\/strong> at the bottom of the screen.<\/p>\n<p>9 &#8211; In the page that opens, <strong>scroll down to the DNS Server<\/strong> fields.<\/p>\n<p>10 &#8211; <strong>Choose &#8220;Use the following DNS Server Addresses&#8221;<\/strong> from the DNS Server dropdown.<\/p>\n<p>11 &#8211; <strong>Change the DNS addresses to the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>8.8.4.4 Primary DNS<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 8.8.8.8 Secondary DNS<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(Note: these are google&#8217;s free public DNS servers, you can find and use others, or even host your own DNS servers, but these are readily available and don&#8217;t spam you with ads when you open a new tab)<\/p>\n<p>12 &#8211; <strong>Click Apply<\/strong>, to close this page.<\/p>\n<p>13 &#8211; <strong>Click Apply<\/strong>, to close the next page.<\/p>\n<p>14 &#8211; <strong>Click Apply<\/strong>, to save your changes.<\/p>\n<p>15 &#8211; <strong>Click Detect Broadband Connection<\/strong> to restart the router.<br \/>\nYou <em>probably<\/em> don&#8217;t have to do this, but it can&#8217;t hurt. Once it restarts, you should be connected to Google&#8217;s public DNS servers.<\/p>\n<h3>Ta Da!!<\/h3>\n<p>Now your browser won&#8217;t be hijacked by Verizon if you hit a bad URL or try to access servers via VPN.<\/p>\n<p>If you really have your heart set on having new browser tabs hijacked, you can always try <a href=\"http:\/\/ootsi.de\/\">ootsi.de<\/a>.
